When we were searching for a town to build our business, we couldn’t have picked a nicer spot. Renfrew is located just 40 minutes west of Ottawa (capital of Canada)  Renfrew is a short drive from scenic Calabogie Peaks, and also Pakenham highlands ski hill resorts.
We are surrounded by lakes and rivers which offer wonderful hiking trails, amazing white water rafting and fishing holes.
We are also a 20 minute drive from the Bonnechere Caves.
Renfrew has a rich history of logging and it boasts the claim of fame of being the birthplace of the NHL. We have several golf courses in the area one of which dates back to early 1900s.

Bonnechere Bakery & Bistro, for saleThe town itself was a lumber town and has many old and cherished homes. Our business sits in the middle of town on Main Street. Just up from us I a theater and several restaurants. Renfrew has an amazing main street lined with heritage buildings, brand new street light, paving, sidewalks and state of the art cross walk intersections. While dining in our shop if you look out the front window, you will see the posts office – which is a large stone building whose clock tower came from London England, dating from the 1800s.
We have 4 banking institutions on our main street. We have one of the finest up to date hospitals in the area with several senior homes located close by. We have 2 central high schools and 3 grade schools in the center of town. There are several churches and a bowling alley, curling rink and hockey arena. Beautiful shaded streets to walk on as well as 2 parks to stroll in. About 3 years ago the building beside us came up for sale. Marie and I jumped at the chance to buy this gorgeous heritage building.

Fifteen years ago my twin sister and I had a dream of owning our own business. We are of German descent, born into a large family of ten children. When we were growing up our household duties included making meals and baking. We both had jobs in the food industry so we naturally thought of opening a bakery/bistro. We wanted to have a soup, sandwich and salad menu, serving lunch and afternoon treats. We wanted to serve our sandwiches on bread our gram would like. So each day we would start out by making farm style breads and baked goods. About 2 and half years ago, Angela joined us a third owner. Angela is a whiz at technology and so has helped to expand our business on the internet. Our first shop sat 12 people; and today we seat 90 people in our dining hall. Thru the years we have moved locations 3 times, always to a larger space.

The Bakery/Bistro, Fine Food & Decor:

Bonnechere Bakery & Bistro, for saleIn the 3 years since we purchased this building, we have done extensive renovations. We exposed the original tin ceiling throughout the building and uncovered the banisters that had been walled in. We then added a bathroom to the décor and fine foods side of the shop and since we love cake we painted it a soft pink icing color (great for the bakery side of things).
On the bakery side there is an old walk-in safe that was used to hide alcohol during prohibition. It is now a tea room with lots of hand-crafted shelves.  On the other side of the front half of the building we made a dining hall that seats 90 people. We have a mix of old and new furnishings, with many antique tables and side boards for large families and groups of people.  The dining hall boasts of large windows that look out onto the tree lined streets. The dining hall also has restored tin ceiling as well as the wall on the mezzanine.
The mezzanine has a large board room for open discussions, an office and an employee lunch room with separated bathroom. This building is 75’ in length; so it runs from street to street with parking in the back.  Behind our dining hall is a large events room (our restaurant is capacity is 140 people) between the dining hall and the events room sits 2 spacious bathrooms. Behind our bakery/fine foods room is our kitchen which runs 20’ by 40’ long. All equipment and shelving, walk-in refrigerator comes with the building.
This year we have repaired the roof. The basement is 9000 square feet of dry storage, plus 2 bathrooms. We do all our unpacking and pricing décor items in the basement.

The second floor is not completely finished. New carpet and utility room has been added as well as ceiling tiles in far back room. There is 4500 square feet of space here, with beautiful large windows overlooking Main Street and parking lot at back.  Our whole business takes up 9000 square feet but could easily be split into 4 separate suites if you choose to do so.  We also added a new property fence at the back of the building.

We have 6 full time staff and two weekend students who work for us.  Maureen starts her day with bread baking and then cinnamon buns, donuts and moves on the soups.  Then works on sandwich bar during lunch...  Marie starts with muffins, croissants, cookies, scones and then makes fresh salads.  The remainder of her day is spent making pies, meat pies, crisps for freezer sales.
Angela starts her morning with all sandwich prep and then moves on the produces gorgeous cakes and cupcakes.  Angela then supervises the dining hall during our busy lunch. One other staff member is the front of sort sales person and the other bakes gluten free products as well as squares and treats. We also make sandwich trays to take away.
We have a client base of seniors, teens (at lunch) 30s, 40s, who loves to sit in our lounge area and enjoy treats and coffee. We are the towns favorite go to for lunch. We are also a tourist hot spot.  On Saturday you will find many people from Ottawa and surrounding area visiting.
